Description: A beautiful 19” closed mouth Tete Jumeau size 8 doll offered by Snowdrift Antiques.Jumeau produced their highly successful Tete Jumeau bebe dolls from 1885 through 1899. The poured bisque heads had either closed or open mouths. The paperweight eyes were either blue or brown. The Jumeau body is typically composition and wood with integrated ball joints and is stamped Bebe Jumeau in back. The lovely creamy bisque and serene expression are hallmarks of this Jumeau line. This Tete Jumeau little lady has a poured bisque head, the bisque has a gorgeous creamy quality. Her head is stamped in back in red ink: DEPOSE / TETE JUMEAU / 8. There is also an incised 8 at the nape of her neck. Her lovely face includes beautiful brown paperweight eyes, painted dark brown eyelashes and brows, beautifully accented nostrils, softly blushed chubby cheeks, and a sweet light red painted closed mouth. She has pierced ears and old glass earrings. The head has a professionally restored/reinforced hairline that comes down approximately 1½” from the rim on her forehead over her left eye. You can see the repair when her head is lit from within, see image 10, but not when her wig is in place. The repainting of the bisque over her repair is slightly peeled off above her left ear, see images 7 and 8, again, it is not visible when her wig is in place. The bisque head is otherwise free of hairlines or chips, see image 9. She retains her original cork pate and dark brown human hair wig with long, loose curls. The wig and pate are not attached/glued to her head. The wig is held onto the pate with a pin.She has an 11-piece wood and composition jointed body; the ball joints are integrated. The lower legs, lower arms, and hands may have been repainted years ago as have her finger nails. There is crazing, some composition bubbling, and missing areas of composition and paint on her body (especially the right forearm and her feet), please refer to the pictures of her undressed and image 12 for some close-ups. The body imperfections are not noticeable once she is dressed. She has been restrung. The torso is stamped in back in blue ink: BEBE JUMEAU / BTE S.G.D.G. DEPOSE.She wears a period outfit of vintage and antique fabrics and trims; it is newer than the doll and was made expertly for her. The coat is a deep orange antique silk satin accented with antique white lace at the cuffs and antique white tatting along the front edge. There is a deep orange antique silk satin band at the dropped waist. The sleeveless dress has a white cotton bodice attached to a deep orange antique silk satin pleated skirt that has an antique white lace overlay and additional orange silk satin pleat embellishments. The bodice has a sewn pleated chevron effect down the front and antique white lace trim at the neck. A vintage gold-tone pin with a faux cameo dangle is attached in front. The dress closes in back with snaps while the coat closes in front with hooks and eyes to the dress. Her underclothes consist of a white cotton and lace trimmed chemise, white cotton pantaloons, a white cotton slip. These were all made for her about 40 years ago. Her hat is a confection of antique deep orange velvet and antique off-white lace and vintage dark rust silk ribbon gathered in front. Coordinating deep orange feathers accent the sides of the hat.Her vintage brown leather shoes are adorned with dark brown ribbon rosettes and gold buttons. She wears fancy orange knitted socks. This doll is from a private collection housed in a smoke-free home.Overall, a quintessential closed mouth Tete Jumeau doll priced affordably to reflect her reinforced/restored hairline.Convenient 3 month layaway plan is available upon request.
