(Note that the cars will work on either AC or DC.) - The Track have show some wear and prior loving use on them and need some cleaning and polishing to obtaned maximum electrical continuity. If you collect American Flyer Trains or Slotcars this item is for you and is a nice example of the 1960 American Flyer Stock Slot Car Race Set. BACKGROUND: The A.C. Gilbert Company was known for their career-building toys (microscopes, chemistry, electrical, etc.), Erector sets and American Flyer trains. In 1960, they entered the booming slot car market with a single set, the No. 19060 Stock Car Race set. (Note that the “Auto-Rama” Terminology Slot Car Sets was not used by the Gilbert Company until 1961.) The 1960 stock car race set was unique to the 1960 year production. Gilbert continued to sell slot car sets up through 1966/1967, and usually carried some parts, cars, accessories over from year to year. However, the 1960 set was a “one-year” set and nothing was carried over to subsequent years sets. The 1961-67 cars were all DC powered. The pick-ups transmitting power from the track to the motor differ from standard slot cars. The cars picked up power through a center spring that rode on the center (common) rail. The other contact was a "brush" that simply dragged on the powered outer rail. These cars featured “Pittman” open frame style motors. Other unique facets were the track, guard rail posts and speed controls. The track was unique. The roadbed was plastic; with 3 rails. The 2 outer rails themselves were common, with a center rail completing the circuit. As an aside, I did not run the cars on the track, but did verify the motors do work. The center pick-up engages the center rail! This set includes: 2 Stock Cars, 18 Curved Tracks, 8 Straight Tracks, 1 90-Degree Crossing, 2 Fly-over Chicane Tracks with Approach and Landing Ramps, Select Cardboard Building Parts (not complete), about 51 Metal Guardrail Posts, a few Flag Posts/Guardrails, DC Transformer, 2 Throttle Controls, Unused Decal Sheet, and the Original Instructions. The box has disintegrated and left are only a few chunks of cardboard. The Cardboard Buildings, People, and Accessories Parts are not complete and did not stand the test of time, but can sometimes be found on-line at a reasonable cost.
