Description: 1964-65 NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR - Gas Pavilion - HANDOUT: English, French, Spanish : The 1964/1965 New York World's Fair was the second World's Fair to be held at Flushing Meadows Park in the Borough of Queens, New York in the 20th century. It opened on April 21, 1964 for two six-month seasons concluding on October 21, 1965. It was the largest World's Fair ever to be held in the United States occupying nearly a square mile of land. Truly a "Universal and International" class exposition, it was not sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) and is often overlooked by historians because it was not an "official" World's Fair. This lack of BIE endorsement meant that many large European nations including Great Britain, France and Germany, as well as Canada and Australia, chose not to participate in the Fair. Most international exhibits were sponsored by tourism and industrial concerns and not officially sanctioned by their governments. This Handout features The Gas Pavilion. The card informs in three languages: English, French and Spanish on its reverse: "Visitors get their first view of the pavilion while riding on the world's largest Carousel, complete with giant prancing horses. Moving ramps carry people to the Carousel high above the main floor of the pavilion. Following the four-minute ride, visitors see the special attractions of the pavilion, at their own leisure. These include: the Fun House of the Future, a demonstration of life tomorrow; the Festival Puppet Show; a Magic, featuring the everyday magic of industry; and tiny fuel cells create most of the power, electricity, heating and cooling for the pavilion; a Theatre of Food, with performances by famous chefs from all over the world; and one of the famous restaurants at the World's Fair...the "Festival '64"." The Handout Card is in good condition.
