Description: WW1 USANITE compass manufactured by Taylor, dated 1917 This is an authentic WW-1 1918 U.S. Military Eng. Dept. Compass, perfect for collectors of militaria. It was made in the United States and has not been modified. This compass is a great piece of history, with its originating from the World War I era. It is a personal field gear item that was used by the United States Military during this time. The compass is in its original state and is a valuable addition to any collection. The USANITE (use at night) compass was used by the US soldiers in WW1. This specific example is dated to 1917, though I've also seen examples dated to 1918. All USANITE compasses would have the same marking of ENG. DEPT. U.S.A. [DATE].The compass face shows the cardinal direction along with degrees between them, the model name of USANITE, the manufacturer and place of manufacturing (TAYLOR, ROCHESTER N.Y.), and the patent date (PAT. APR. 20-1915).Having checked my compass against the one on my phone it does seem to eventually point in the right direction, but it takes a while to actually do so and wobbles quite a lot. I can only assume this is due to age and condition.
