In good soil with adequate light and moisture, the trees can grow 3+ feet in one year. Black walnuts are a native range is from New England states to Norther Texas to Florida. They appear in a variety of geographies from hills to low-lands. Planting two trees helps to ensure tree reproduction. In Fall the leaves turn yellow and have a strong aromatic smell when crushed. The nuts are edible and encased in a yellow-green husk which turn black after the nut falls to the ground. The husks are used for stains, dyes and some medicines. The nuts are edible in many foods and for wildlife, but the meat can be difficult to remove from the shell. Walnut wood is highly valued for a lumber including cabinets, furniture, and fine veneers.
