Description: Farmall H4 Magneto Impulse coupling puller. I machined this puller to easily and safely remove the most stubborn H4 magneto impulse coupling without damage to the magneto permanent magnets or shaft threads. This puller is an improved version of the original International H4 magneto SE-912 service tool. Couplings should be removed to clean and lubricate the pawls and spring to insure proper impulse trip point timing. To pull the tightest coupling without damage simply lock the inner and outer drive members together with a drift pin inserted through the hole in the outer member as pictured in the 4th and 5th illustrations. Apply a box or socket wrench to the retaining nut and an adjustable wrench to one of the coupling driving lugs and loosen and remove the retaining nut. Insert and bottom the puller body into the coupling and tighten the hardened puller bolt while holding the outer member with the adjustable wrench. Tighten the center puller bolt firmly and with a light tap on the bolt head the most stubborn impulse coupling will be easily and safely removed without any damage to the magneto shaft threads or permanent magnets. This puller will also work on the F-4 and F-6 magnetos if they are equipped with the later style F-type coupling instead of the earlier E4A Magneto type coupling as depicted in the last illustration. Please see the last 2 photos of an impulse coupling I recently removed from an H4 magneto that I was servicing for a friend that complained about difficult starting. The pawls were tight and sticking after the engine had been running above the magneto missing speed rpm (100-150 RPM, pawls extended to disengage impulse action, second to last photo). The pawls would not retract with the springs after engine shutdown (Last photo) and would not allow the impulse to function properly on the next engine startup. After pulling the coupling, cleaning and lubricating the pawls and spring, the Magneto was reinstalled, timed, and the tractor started amazingly easy within one to two crankshaft revolutions. This is even more important if you want to hand crank and start your tractor. I recently modified and improved the design of my IHC / Farmall H4 impulse coupling removal tool to incorporate a 20% larger diameter hardened anvil bolt. The larger face surface diameter of this anvil bolt will help distribute the force exerted on the magneto shaft and ease the removal operation. Please see the last two pictures of the removal tool that illustrate the difference in the new design on the left vs the older design on the right.
