Tarkay is considered to be a key figure in the modern figurative movement. Artworks by the Israeli artist are instantly recognizable—studies capturing people and places in a timeless world, particularly beautiful women in their native habitats -- parlors, terraces, and quiet cafés. Influenced by the work of both Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Tarkay’s expressive, use of color lent a dream-like quality to his serigraphs, prints, and paintings. Tarkay's roots as a painter took hold in the years of modern art. His bright colors and flat patterns built on the paths forged by Matisse, Mouly, and the Fauves. In Tarkay's paintings, the perspective dissolved into colors and shapes, the woman's face becoming the focus, and the world reconstructs around her. The quality of his line was organic, the quality of his woman, an inspiration for furtive glances, love letters, and innumerable nights of passion. His art has been featured in more than 50 exhibitions around the world. Tarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica, Serbia, and was rescued family settled in Israel after Allied forces freed them from a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Tarkay went on to study at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and later the Avni Institute of Art and Design in Tel Aviv. Later in life, Tarkay mentored younger Israeli artists, including Yaacov Agam and Yuval Wolfson. He died unexpectedly in 2012. Reduced estate sale price.
