Description: Limoges LS&S Plate 9 1/2" Hand Painted by Max Game Bird Cock w/Gold 1891-1920's An Elegant Decorative 9 1/2" CABINET PLATE from Limoges, France, BLUE HOODED Cock GAME BIRD w/Gold Trim, Embossed, Scalloped Rim, Hand Painted by Artist Max in the studio at L.S. & S. circa 1891-mid 1920's DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted plate was decorated by the talented artist, Max who is known as a painter of gamebirds who painted for such sought-after decorating studios as Flambeau, Pouyat, L.S.& S., Latrille Freres, Coronet and Jean Boyer. The color palette used is blue, green, purple, brown, yellow and orange w/gold. The game bird cock is so regal with his delightful colors. The washes vary from yellow to blue togreen to purple to orange. This is such a realistic painting of a cock game bird and was obviously meant to be displayed as a cabinet plate or as a wall hanging. There are raised paint dots to give texture to the design. CONDITION: While this plate is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects and only the smallest damage. There is the tiniest nick on the rim that hides in the scalloping. There are no chips, other nicks, cracks, rubbings, crazing or hairlines. It is clean & white on the back. There is no wear to the gold or paint. DIMENSIONS: This plate has a diameter of 9 1/2" with a height of 1". HISTORY/MARKS: L.S. & S. is frequently incorrectly named as Lewis Straus & Sons. But, in fact, the company of Lazarus Straus & Sons was founded in 1869 and successfully specialized in the import and resale of glass and ceramics. By 1874, Nathan Straus (one of 4 sons of Lazarus) convinced Macy’s to allow the shop-in-shop chinaware departments in all their stores. So successful was the venture that they formed the U.S.-based New York & Rudolstadt Pottery Company, Inc. to import from the Rudolstadt Works in Thurginia, Germany. With expanding business, Lazarus Straus opened subsidiaries in France (L.S.& S. Limoges, a decorating studio) and Bohemia while maintaining a glass importing business in London. Lazarus died in 1898 and, by 1896, Nathan had full control of the business which he retained until 1930 when it closed. In 1924, he renamed the business Nathan Straus and Sons. The source for the above is: Bohemian Decorated Porcelain by Dr. James D. Henderson and the subscribed web source porcelainmarksandmore. The red decorator overglaze mark on the plate is mark #1 in Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd Edition. This mark was used from 1890's to the mid 1920's. The green underglaze mark is an unknown mark that Gaston cites as mark #4 used after 1891. This limits the production time period to 1891-mid 1920's.
