Description: The HistoryMido, which gets its name from the Spanish “to measure”, was founded by Georges Schaeren on November 11th, 1918. That day also happens to be the exact day on which Germany formally surrendered and ended World War I and the birthdate of Leonardo Dicaprio and this author but that’s less important. Interestingly enough, Mido began life as a maker of more novelty watches or what we would consider today, fashion watches. They even produced a line of watches in the shape of famous car radiators of the day such as Bugatti, Excelsior, and Peugeot. In 1934 the brand made a hard pivot with the introduction of the Mido Multifort. The Multifort was a true technological innovation that brought together waterproofing, anti magnetism, and impact resistance all in one watch. The Multifort would clearly establish Mido as a serious watch manufacturer and that would be reinforced by the introduction of the automatic Multifort in 1935. The ReferenceThe Mido Multichrono is a derivative of the Multifort model with the addition of a chronograph. This did however preclude the watch from being automatic as the first automatic chronographs were still a few years away when this watch was produced. Being part of the Multifort family of watches means that this watch came with the same great waterproofing, anti magnetism, and impact resistance that the Multifort line was famous for. Just to be sure that you knew this, Mido printed all of this on the decagonal caseback. This particular watch also benefits from a case that was produced by Taubert & Fils, who had taken over the famous case manufacturer François Borgel. While not trademarked Borgel on the caseback the “BRIT PAT 385509” stamp on the inner caseback is the patent number from Tauberts and ties the case back to them. The CaseThe 35mm stainless steel case, produced by Taubert & Fils, is in very good condition. It has scratches throughout the case appropriate for its age, but there are no major issues to disclose. Notably, all components of the case look to be correct and original including the decorative chronograph pushers and signed case back. The Dial and HandsThe star of the show for this watch is absolutely the dial that has aged to a beautiful cream . The aging has happened surprisingly uniformly with only slight issues between 11 and 1 and some clear areas ,cosmetic appearance 9 of 10. The MovementThis watch is powered by a Mido signed hand wound chronograph movement cal Minerva 13-20. The watch is running and all functions of the chronograph are working as intended. The service history is unknown.
