Description: "Power and Glory", the ORIGINAL PAINTING (1996) by Nicholas Watts, from which his all-time, number one selling print was produced. Acrylic on composite board, the painting is approx. 42x29 inches with a framed dimension of 50x37 inches. It was/is a tribute to Steve McQueen for his stubborn persistence and sacrifice in making the film "Le Mans" and of course the awesome duels between the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512. If you know of the Le Mans 24hours, the 917 and this film, their importance in the popularization of international sports car racing in America and the mastery and world wide fame of Nicholas Watts, then you know what this is. It will include a verbal and written provenance as well as Mr. Watts' ORIGINAL 'study' (signed by Brian Redman and Derek Bell) for the drop-down remarque of Steve McQueen that appears on the limited edition prints, and a copy of 'Sports Car Market' magazine May 1998, which features this painting on the cover. Pick up or shipping is the responsibility of the buyer but I will facilitate this on my end. Update July/2024: This painting, along with the limited edition prints, was originally signed by five drivers (I have the photos). Over the first decade or so, these signatures disappeared as they were not done with light-fast markers. I learned to accept this as there was nothing I could do about it. However, two weeks ago, after nearly thirty years, I happened to be sitting on the floor beneath the painting and looked up at it. To my shock and surprise this viewing/lighting angle revealed that the signatures of Brian Redman, David Piper, Richard Attwood, Jacki Ickx and Derek Bell are still there!! My best guess is the solvent/carrier and/or the resin in the marker fluid have left a permanent chemical signature even though the black pigment has faded away. I have four additional, historically significant, Watts originals. "BRM - Final Victory", "The Doctor has Arrived" - Phillip Island 2001, "Che Spettacolo" - Phillip Island 2004, and "Perfect Day" - Laguna Seca 2005. Feel free to contact me if you should have questions AND serious interest in any of these. Note: This 917 (the actual car, chassis #917-022) will be auctioned by Mecum Auctions, in Kissimmee, FL on January 18, 2025. The last Gulf Porsche 917 auctioned (chassis #917-024), sold in 2017 for over $14 MILLION. https://collectorscarworld.com/steve-mcqueens-917k-lemans-hero-returns-to-auction/
