On 2 September 1945, on the deck of the battleship Missouri, military and diplomatic representatives of the nine Allied powers assembled to accept the unconditional surrender of the Imperial Army and Navy. Shown in MacArthur, Supreme Allied Commander, Pacific, seated at a desk on the deck of the Missouri, surrounded by the above and others, signing the official instrument of surrender. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific fleet, was the official signatory for the United States; Admiral W.F. "Bull" Halsey commanded the U.S. Third Fleet; Wainwright commanded the U.S. forces at Bataan and Corregidor, and was a prisoner of war from 1941 until rescued in 1945. Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner commanded the American amphibious forces at the Guadalcanal landings and later those at Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, Guam and Iwo Jima.
