These were originally made for M1903 and M1 Garand rifles but in 1959 they were retrofitted to fit the larger barrel ring for the Italian BM59 rifle. Some of the bayonets were cut down M1905 bayonets and others were the regular standard issued shorter blade Model M1 bayonets. This one is the cut-down blade bayonet. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. The pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. The original guard was replaced with the larger cylinder guard so it is not unusual to have a slight wiggle. This one was retro-fitted well. They have light handling marks and scrapes. The finish has started to change to a patina color. The screw securely fastens the two (2x) serrated grip panels to the tang. The screw has a strong slot. Some of the grip serrations have worn down. There are light compressions and draglines. There are no chips or cracks. The spine has a few small impact marks, the fullers and sides have light handling marks with some light finish loss along the leading edges. Again, the original long blade has been shortened. The fuller going all the way to the tip gives it away. The blade edge has no nicks or dings. The blade appears to have its original factory edge all the way up to where it was cut. The tip is intact and comes to a dull straight point. Most of the finish still remains. There is a heavy layer of cosmoline on the blade. REMEMBER, this will NOT FIT an M1 Garand rifle. The left ricasso is marked "PAL" (within an oval) over a flaming bomb and "U.S.". The right ricasso has the serial number "5343060 / U.C. - MOD". It appears to be a "D" at the end, it is hard to read. Scabbard is NOT included. This bayonet will be a great addition to your Italian BM59 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
